Genesis Theatre Design Progamme
The Mulberry Schools Trust is delighted to be partnered with the Genesis Theatre Programme, which is based at Mulberry UTC.
This unique initiative aims to address the under-representation of global majority creatives in theatre design by offering free, comprehensive training and mentorship to adults from disadvantaged backgrounds who face barriers to opportunities.
Open to individuals aged 21 and over, the scheme does not require formal qualifications. Applicants are asked to submit a portfolio or summary of previous creative work, whether from employment, education, or a self-directed project.
The Genesis Theatre Design Programme is a partnership bringing together the Mulberry Schools Trust, the National Theatre and The School of Historical Dress, with funding from the Genesis Foundation and additional support from the James Family Charitable Trust.
Launched in 2023, the two-year, part-time course focuses on Staging, Performance and Costume Design. Participants learn directly from the National Theatre’s world-class designers and directors and benefit from lectures, research projects, practical training, design assignments and placements as design assistants. Its approach mirrors the renowned Motley Theatre Design Course, maintaining a close connection to professional theatre.
Course leaders

Through our close partnership, students and staff at the Mulberry Schools Trust benefit by attending workshops, design presentations and masterclasses delivered by industry professionals. They gain valuable insight into theatre design, production processes and creative careers, as well as the chance to observe the programme’s participants at work. Staff also have opportunities to deepen their specialist knowledge and strengthen their own creative practice through collaboration with the course leaders and visiting artists. Having the programme based at Mulberry UTC enriches our curriculum, raises aspiration across the Trust and ensures that our young people see first-hand what is possible within the creative industries.
