Mulberry Theatre Company

An Award-winning Theatre Company

Mulberry Theatre Company is the award-winning theatre company of the Mulberry Schools Trust, founded by students and sustained by a vibrant community of teachers, alumni, creative practitioners, families and partners. For more than a decade, MTC has built a national reputation for producing bold, original theatre of exceptional quality, grounded in pupil voice, community collaboration and our unswerving belief in the transformative power of the arts.

Our journey began in 2007 with our first production, Mehndi Night. What started as a school-based project quickly grew into a pioneering creative force. Since then, we have commissioned and premiered seven original plays at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe – each shaped through workshops with students and informed by the lived experiences, imagination and creativity of our young people.

In 2009, Mulberry Theatre Company made history as the first British state school to win the prestigious Scotsman Fringe First Award for The Unravelling. This recognition marked an important milestone, establishing Mulberry Theatre Company as a leading example of what inclusive, youth-led, community-rooted theatre can achieve. Our past productions include Stolen Secrets, The Domino Effect, Cry God for Harry, England & St George!, Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and most recently, One House on Brick Lane. Across all these works, our commitment to excellence, representation and access has remained constant.

Mulberry Theatre Company is deeply embedded within the wider arts culture of the Mulberry Schools Trust and creates a powerful platform for young people to explore the arts, develop their creative identity and grow in confidence, leadership and ambition.

Mulberry Alumni Theatre Company

Within Mulberry Theatre Company sits the Mulberry Alumni Theatre Company, established in 2014 as a creative home for young women in Tower Hamlets and across the Mulberry Schools Trust community. This all-female, intergenerational company is led by alumni, staff, parents and adult learners who continue to shape Mulberry’s rich artistic traditions.

The Alumni Theatre Company provides an empowering space where women can continue their creative journeys beyond school, developing new work and showcasing it on professional stages. Their past productions include The House of Bilquis Bibi (2016), Mano’s (2018), and Running With Ghosts (2022), all warmly received for their bold storytelling and authenticity.

Mulberry Alumni Theatre Company plays an essential role in Mulberry’s creative landscape:

  • Creating platforms for voice and visibility

  • Championing the rightful place of diverse women in the creative industries

  • Offering safe, supportive creative spaces

  • Building intergenerational connections and community cohesion

Returning to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in 2026

We are delighted to announce that Mulberry Theatre Company will return to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in 2026, once again taking two new and exciting original productions—one from the student company and one from the Mulberry Alumni Theatre Company.

These productions, soon to be announced, will continue our tradition of commissioning new writing rooted in student experience, identity and imagination. They will offer young people and alumni the chance to work with leading practitioners, develop industry-level skills, and perform on one of the world’s largest arts platform.
