The Mulberry Production Arts Academy aims to discover, train and empower the next generation of creative changemakers in the field of production and technical arts.
The Production Arts Academy is a partnership initiative with the National Theatre and The Royal Central School of Speech and Drama, offering training in the field of production and technical arts and providing a specialist pipeline for students to develop career aspirations in this industry.
This academy takes explicit positive action to address the current skills shortage in the UK’s production and technical arts workforce and the wider chronic crisis in representation within the UK’s cultural and creative industries. We aim to create the next generation of workers from Black, Asian, and ethnically diverse backgrounds, those with disabilities, and those that are economically disadvantaged.

Mulberry Production Arts Academy operates on a three-term structure, running for students aged 13-17 on Saturdays during term time, and in the school holidays. The academy also runs an outreach programme for local primary-aged pupils.
All students enrolled on the programme will gain:
A key aim of the academy is to engage with and educate younger students. We will offer a targeted taster day to Mulberry Schools Trust primary schools and other local schools for Year 5 and 6 students. On this day, students will learn about the principles of stagecraft, the wide variety of careers within this industry, as well as pathways into this vibrant and exciting sector.
20 places will be offered to 13-14 yearolds within the Mulberry Schools Trust. For KS3, the academy will focus on developing students’ design and technical skills across a range of disciplines including lighting, sound, set, and costume. Throughout the year, KS3 students will work on in-house productions across the Trust to develop and put into practice their taught skills.
10 places will be offered to 16-17 year-olds within the Trust taking an arts subject. A key focus of the KS5 programme is to develop students’ practical leadership skills. Across the year, students will learn the principles of producing and project management. From this, they will develop their teamworking, problem solving, and organisational skills.
We hope to continue to build a supportive network of like-minded people who share our passion to move the arts world to a more inclusive place, with diverse voices and community at its heart.
There are many valuable ways in which the work of the academy can be supported. Through accessing placements, work experience, mentoring, and shadowing opportunities, our students can gain meaningful experience of work in this field and benefit from the guidance and support of experienced industry professionals.
